We love to celebrate greatness and are very happy to share this news today!
In a shining moment for MCAS Cherry Point, Hospital Corpsman Second Class Sophia Teams, a Pharmacy Specialist at the Maritime Health Center Cherry Point, has achieved top honors by being recognized as the U.S. Navy's Junior Pharmacy Specialist of the Year. This blog post celebrates Teams' outstanding contributions to her field, her leadership, and the challenges she has overcome in her impressive career.
Sophia Teams, originally from Phoenix, Arizona, serves as the Leading Petty Officer (LPO) in the facility's Pharmacy, showcasing exceptional leadership skills and dedication to her role. As a Pharmacy Specialist, her responsibilities include the accurate dispensing of medications to Marines, Mariners, and beneficiaries, all while engaging with patients about their prescriptions.
Teams acknowledges the challenges
that come with her role, particularly the delicate balance between managing
serious tasks and fostering a positive work environment. She emphasizes the
importance of seeking advice from mentors during overwhelming moments,
demonstrating her commitment to continuous improvement.
Reflecting on her journey, Teams shares, "Between
trying to complete my bachelor's degree, having a child, and working long days,
I'm continuously facing new challenges." Despite these challenges, she
remains resolute in her pursuit of personal and professional development.
Teams draws inspiration from her father,
a former Navy Rescue Swimmer, in her decision to serve in the Navy. His
encouragement serves as a driving force for Teams to work diligently with
junior Mariners and civilian staff, embodying a strong commitment to mentorship
and teamwork.
In her two years of service at
the Cherry Point Pharmacy, Teams and her team successfully implemented two
significant changes to patient services. The introduction of MHS Genesis, a new
electronic health record system in March 2022, and the launch of Q-Anywhere, an
electronic queue system for prescription filling, in September 2023, required
them to adapt and integrate new capabilities while prioritizing patient safety.
Teams, as the Leading Petty Officer, plays a crucial role in
onboarding new Mariners into the Pharmacy Specialist position. Her experience
and depth of knowledge contribute to mentoring newcomers on their duties and
responsibilities within the department.
Sophia Teams
encourages fellow Mariners to recognize the value of dedication and hard work.
She emphasizes that every step taken towards personal and professional goals,
within the Navy and in personal life, is a source of pride. "Your hard
work may not be recognized every time you make an achievement, but you should
take pride in every step you take towards achieving your goals," advises
Teams.
Sophia Teams' recognition as the U.S. Navy's
Junior Pharmacy Specialist of the Year is a testament to her dedication,
leadership, and resilience. Her journey at MCAS Cherry Point exemplifies the
Navy's commitment to excellence and the invaluable contributions of individuals
like Teams to the well-being of the maritime community.
